Well, there's definatley a bit more shock in chapter 38. Number one, there's Mr Hargrave. He admits to Helen that he loves her. And I think that since Helen has been through so much, she definately was right to object to his offer.
I mean, that would partly explain why she didn't want to go TOO deep into a relationship at first with Grayham. Maybe she was too deeply disturbed by the past to do anything else with her life...?
